The Hardship Assistance Program (HAP) is in place to assist Porter County individuals and families who are facing financial difficulties due to unexpected events, such as a job loss, illness or natural disaster.

The program offers a one-time financial assistance of up to $300 that can help community members with rental payments, utility bill payments, household and car repairs as well as medical expenses, including hearing aids, eyeglasses, medications or dental work.

Program guidelines for eligibility:

  • Payments are made directly to the vendor or company

  • Applicants need to have sought other assistance options before seeking HAP help

  • Applicants need to show ability to provide additional payments or establish re-payment plan

  • Assistance will be provided to individuals with overdue or shut-off notices.

Needed documents to apply:

  • Picture ID of head of household

  • Social security number

  • Proof of income for all household members over 18

  • Proof of residency

  • Proof of other assistance
