New Gallery to Honor Artists with Disabilities
Valparaiso – Porter County Aging & Community Services is providing a platform for artists with disabilities and special needs to showcase their creativity.
The team is seeking submissions of original artwork - in any medium - to fill the space at PCACS’ new art gallery. Pieces can be dropped off at PCACS, 1005 Campbell St., during office hours: Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3:30 pm. The office is closed from noon to 1 pm for lunch.
“We envision the gallery as a hub of creativity, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to appreciate and participate in artistic expression. Through exhibitions, workshops and collaborative projects, the gallery will encourage intergenerational engagement, promote cultural enrichment, and provide a space where individuals feel valued and inspired,” said PCACS Executive Director Jason Kegebein.
“We also hope it will increase awareness and support for individuals with disabilities and older adults by highlighting their contributions to the arts and fostering greater community inclusion.”
Kegebein said art is an especially vital avenue for self-expression for individuals with disabilities.
“It provides an outlet to convey emotions and experiences that may be difficult to express through words. Engaging in artistic creation fosters confidence, improves motor skills and supports cognitive health,” he said.
The addition of an art gallery is another way of connecting with the community as the team seeks to expand offerings and bolster its mission, according to Kegebein.
“The gallery is an innovative expansion of PCACS’ mission to enhance the quality of life for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and the broader community,” Kegebein said. “By introducing a creative space, we are fostering an inclusive environment where artistic expression becomes a tool for connection, empowerment and personal fulfillment.”
The program is supported by an Indiana Dunes Tourism grant, which designates PCACS as a recognized tourism site.
“This designation will expand our community awareness, services and mission across Northwest Indiana, bringing more visitors and engagement to our programs,” Kegebein said. “By creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in the arts, PCACS is reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity, dignity and the well-being of all community members.”
Artwork is being accepted through June. Contact Valerie Buroff with questions at 219-464-9904. Once artwork has been collected, there will be a grand opening event to celebrate the artists and officially open the gallery to the community.
